It is crafted from a white metal, similar to nickel silver, and is finished in silver and gold.
This letter opener is very large and heavy; its etched design features a lush botanical motif animated by flowers, birds, and butterflies against a gold background.
It is a magnificent piece, which unfortunately is not signed or hallmarked to allow for identification but is reminiscent of the engraving work of silversmiths such as Henri Gabert or Alphonse Debain.
