The Side Stitch, Watercolor Drawing, André Dignimont (1891-1965)
A friend of many writers, he skillfully illustrated works by Colette (Mitsou, L'ingénue Libertine), Pierre Mac Orlan, Francis Carco, and others.
The beauty of the female form was a particular source of inspiration for him, but his illustrations are diverse, charmingly lively, sometimes ironic, and always fresh.
His watercolor drawings, several examples of which are held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, possess the old-fashioned charm of a working-class, slightly roguish Paris of the 1920s and 30s.
He also proved himself a talented creator of sets and costumes for opera and theater, not to mention a few acting roles in films by Jean Renoir and Sacha Guitry.
This drawing in ink, wash, and watercolor, which is not without humor, is annotated in pencil "Le stitch de côté" (The stitch on the side). The work is signed in ink in the lower right corner.
