Very Important Empire Period Clock
A rare and important mantel clock by Picnot père in Paris, circa 1815. The figurative case depicting the goddess Pomona is of exceptional quality, with fine chasing and gilding. It contains its original wire-driven movement, which appears to be in working order but has not been tested. The enamel dial with Roman numerals and two blued-steel moon hands is surrounded by a bezel decorated with a garland of fruit and shells, supported by two putti riding swans. The rectangular base features a cartouche in its center, decorated with four musical putti. Pomona surmounts the monumental composition, one foot resting on a shell, with a sphere bearing the signs of the zodiac to her right. Picnot père was located on rue du Fossé Montmartre in Paris from 1812 to 1821, and his work can be found in European royal collections and museums, some with cases executed by P. PH. THOMIRE.
