Manufacture Royale de Sèvres
Hard paste porcelain medallion
Dimensions: D. 12.5 (cm.)
Sèvres, circa 1829-30
Rare set of four medallions depicting Louis XVI, the Dukes of Berry and Angoulême, and Charles X in their original frames. These portraits are part of a series of portraits of crowned heads and influential figures produced by the Manufacture de Sèvres in circular medallions of various sizes. They are notable for retaining their original frames, sponsor labels, and Sèvres store labels.
The archives in Sèvres tell us that these items were delivered to the Duke of Doudeauville on June 14, 1830, and documented as such in the cash sales register: “18 cameo medallions depicting portraits of kings of France, princes, and princesses of their families” at 5 francs each and 7 “idem” at 4 francs Archives, Sèvres Vz 5 fol. 44 verso.
The second Duke of Doudeauville, Louis-François Sosthène I de la Rochefoucauld, was the son of Ambroise Polycarpe, a close friend of the Bourbons and the first duke of that name. He was appointed director of the Arts of the King's Household in August 1824, then aide-de-camp in May 1825. A Legitimist, he returned to private life under the July Monarchy.
Condition report: excellent condition, very rare state of preservation.
