Large Bronze Sculpture "mucius Scaevola Braving Pain" After Louis Pierre Deseine (1749 – 1822)
Charles Gautier is one of those 19th-century bronze founders and merchants for whom sources are scattered and often come from trade directories rather than complete biographies. A founder and manufacturer of art bronzes, he was active in the mid- and second half of the 19th century (1845–1880).
His premises in Bordeaux were located at 12 Cours de l'Intendance, a prestigious commercial district, and at 95 Rue Judaïque, an important thoroughfare for artisans and merchants. He also had a presence in Paris at 26 Rue Charlot (3rd arrondissement), a district then very active for bronze casters, chasers, and dealers of furniture and objets d'art. His presence in both Paris and Bordeaux was a marker of commercial excellence.
