"Important Marble Group After The Antique The Wrestlers "
Important Carrara marble group after the antique, depicting a wrestler triumphing over his opponent, on a naturalistic base. The deliberately exaggerated modeling of the work contributes to conveying the ferocity of the fight. Note that part of a finger is missing and has been restored by our workshop. Very high quality of execution. The antique marble group that inspired this bronze was discovered in 1583 near the Porta San Giovanni in Rome. In June of the same year, the group was purchased by Cardinal Ferdinand de' Medici, the future Grand Duke of Tuscany, and is now housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. A minor restoration has been made to a missing index finger (see photo no. 5).
