Japanese Bronze Sculpture By Nakamura Akira : Horse

This refined bronze sculpture is the work of Nakamura AKIRA 中村 輝 (1913-1993), an important yet understated figure ofpostwar Japanese sculpture. Born in Ōgaki, Gifu Prefecture, in 1913, Nakamuraworked under the art name Akira (輝); his given name was Jirō (二郎). Trained in sculpture at the ImperialArt School, he developed a strong academic foundation before establishing ahighly personal sculptural language grounded in form, restraint, and presence.

A long-standing member of the Ichiyōkai Art Association, Nakamuraexhibited regularly from the 1950s onward and became particularly known for hisfigurative and animal sculptures, with the horse emerging as a central andrecurring subject. For the artist, the horse was not a symbol of spectacle orheroism, but a vehicle for exploring mass, balance, and inner vitality.

The present bronze exemplifies Nakamura’s mature style. The horse isdepicted standing, head gently lowered, its posture calm yet charged with quietstrength. Later works such as 一粒の種 (A Grain of Seed), created for the ŌgakiCity Water Park in 1983, demonstrate his continued engagement with public spaceand symbolic form.
