"Lecoultre Powermatic Automatic Watch, Black Dial, Power Reserve, 1950s Style, Gold-filled Leather Strap"
A Lecoultre Powermatic watch from the 1950s, gold-filled. Historically, this watch is equipped with a movement produced by the prestigious Swiss manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre. However, this renowned company, seeking to penetrate the American market, was penalized by substantial import duties. To circumvent these taxes, Jaeger-LeCoultre conceived the idea of shipping not complete, finished watches to the United States, but only their movements and dials. The watch cases themselves were produced locally in the USA, hence the "gold-filled" designation. The dial, however, only mentions “LeCoultre,” even though the movement itself is indeed produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre in Switzerland! The movement powering this watch is extremely sought after: a self-winding mechanical movement, it features a complication that allows the wearer to assess the remaining power reserve, displayed on the main dial in a window at 12 o'clock. In the photos, the watch has not been worn and therefore does not have a power reserve indicator; the red window, a gauge indicating the imminent end of the movement's power reserve, is visible. The seconds hand is mounted in the center, which was not common on watches in the 1950s. Jaeger-LeCoultre thus demonstrates, once again, the pioneering nature of its movements. The black dial contrasts with the power reserve indicator, whether white or red, and highlights the luminous color of the case. This watch features a wide bezel and lugs, typical of its 1950s era. Originally designed for men, it now offers a perfectly unisex look. As previously mentioned, the watch is signed. Its movement is in perfect working order and has been serviced; its proper functioning is guaranteed by us for one year (except in cases of shock or immersion). The dial shows slight discoloration; we have, in keeping with tradition, left the watch in its original condition. Restoration can be considered if necessary. Model: Powermatic.
