Large Omega From The 1950s – Stainless Steel – Mechanical Caliber 266

Artist: Omega

A men's wristwatch from Omega, made in the 1950s, notable for its particularly generous proportions for the era.

Its steel case has a diameter of 39 mm excluding the crown, a significant size for a wristwatch from the 1950s. The large dial opening, accentuated by the slim bezel, gives it a very contemporary look on the wrist, while retaining the understated elegance characteristic of Omega watches from this period.

The light-colored dial, which has developed a soft, natural patina over time, is adorned with applied hour markers and an Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock. The hour markers and hands have a slightly coppery hue, which lends warmth and refinement to the overall design and creates a subtle contrast with the steel case. A fine peripheral minute track completes the time display.

At 6 o’clock is a small seconds sub-dial, set within a finely crafted circular counter, which harmoniously balances the dial’s composition and reinforces the characteristic aesthetic of mechanical watches from that era.

The watch is powered by the Omega 266 caliber, a 17-jewel hand-wound mechanical movement belonging to the famous family of 30-mm Omega movements derived from the 30T2, one of the manufacture’s great historic mechanical lineages.

The case is extended by long, tapered lugs that slope slightly downward, visually lightening its proportions. Its domed case back, with soft, rounded contours, naturally follows the curve of the wrist and contributes as much to wearing comfort as it does to the fluidity of its profile. Despite its particularly large diameter for the period, the watch thus retains an elegant and balanced silhouette.

It features its original, repolished Plexiglas crystal as well as its original Omega-logoed crown, which is particularly flat and discreetly integrated into the case profile.

The watch is mounted on a havana-colored crocodile leather strap, whose brown hues elegantly complement the slightly coppery tones of the hour markers and hands. Its original Omega pin buckle is also logoed.

A particularly interesting vintage Omega due to its 39 mm diameter and large dial opening—unusual for the 1950s— combining a surprisingly contemporary presence with the elegance of a watch from that era and the horological appeal of the mechanical Caliber 266.
