Gaston Charles Guillaume Darbour was born in 1869 in Sedan, in the Ardennes region of France. From a very young age, he showed an artistic vocation: at 14, captivated by illustrations, he announced to his parents his desire to become an artist. They, unconvinced, sent him to travel to Germany, Austria, and England to dissuade him. But at 20, he enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs (School of Decorative Arts), then continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts) under Jules Lefebvre and Jean Benjamin-Constant. He would later consider these studies "useless." The decisive turning point in his career came when a friend introduced him to Félicien Rops. Upon discovering his sketchbook, his mentor advised him to dedicate himself to engraving. Darbour followed this path and became a renowned artist for his lithographs and fine engravings, often printed in very small editions. Born into a wealthy family, he was not dependent on the Parisian art market and led a peaceful life at the Château d'Uzos, near Pau. He nevertheless actively participated in artistic life and exhibited regularly at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where his work was noticed. As a lithographer, he also contributed to the Art Nouveau portfolios of the magazine L'Estampe Moderne, which provided a prestigious showcase for artists of his time. His works, imbued with elegance and sensitivity, circulated in Parisian and European artistic circles. Today, some of his creations are held in French museums, notably the Musée Maurice Denis in Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the Musée Antoine Lécuyer in Saint-Quentin. His name also appears in the catalogue of the Musée d'Orsay, proof of the recognition of his contribution to the history of engraving and lithography of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
