Painting By Edouard Pignon

Artist: Edouard Pignon
Edouard Pignon

Édouard Pignon was a French painter of the New School of Paris, born on February 12, 1905, in Bully-les-Mines (Pas-de-Calais) and died on May 14, 1993, in La Couture-Boussey (Eure).

His prolific body of work, which is difficult to categorize, unfolds in series centered on various themes that follow one another or unfold simultaneously, sometimes intertwining: the hardships of the working class, ship sails and olive tree trunks, peasant labor, cockfights, the horrors of war, nude divers, and sun-drenched beaches. Alongside Picasso, with whom he was close friends for three decades, he fought in the 1950s against the dogmatism of Socialist Realism, without, however, joining his non-figurative painter friends with whom he had frequently exhibited since the 1940s in France and abroad.
