"beer Drinkers" Pencil Case, Claude Agier Mollinari Ceramic
Artist: Claude Agier Mollinari
Here is another ceramic piece by the French ceramist Claude Agier Mollinari. It belongs to her series of works exploring ancient alphabets. Created by applying an ancient cylinder seal, this impression perfectly reproduces the original representations. The seal, belonging to the collection of the Baghdad Archaeological Museum, was entrusted to the artist as part of her research and in response to Claude's evident interest in cuneiform writing. The removable lids are engraved with symbols depicting a banquet scene with two figures and an ancient, historically attested script. This is in no way an invented or decorative script, but rather the cuneiform alphabet of Ugarit, consciously integrated into her artistic work. The artist was able to work from original sources and authentic tools, giving this piece a scholarly, archaeological, and conceptual dimension. These engraved symbols bear witness to his approach of transmitting and reinterpreting ancient knowledge through ceramics. The exterior surface has a deliberately rough texture, but inside, a crystalline glaze with deep emerald green hues is revealed, offering great visual richness and a strong organic dimension.
