Maffrash Karabag Caucasus. Circa 1900. 116 X 56 X 47 Cm
Extraordinary Maffrash Karabag from the Caucasus. Maffrash are the largest carrying bags used by the nomadic populations of Persia and the Caucasus. Once the camp was set up, they served as prams. I said extraordinary, here are three reasons. The colors, ultra-bright and vibrant. It's a festival of colors. Also, the presence of some is totally unexpected on such objects. The technique, the one used here, is flat weaving, commonly called kilim. I would say that less than 5% of Maffrash are made using this technique. More often, it's the Sumak technique or objects embroidered using a second weft thread. The weaving. This one is extremely fine and, above all, strikingly regular. Considering this aspect alone, one could easily mistake it for a much older weaving, mid-19th century or earlier. We could, of course, have mentioned the object's originality! We have over a hundred Maffrash pieces in our collection, complete or in fragmentary form. We are currently compiling a catalogue on the subject. In the meantime, feel free to ask us for photos. Now, I'll answer the following question: What can we do with such an object in our respective homes? The idea is to build a lightweight wooden structure that we insert inside, which restores volume to the object. This way, we easily obtain a magnificent coffee table or a kind of seat for two people. Placed horizontally on the base, you'll have an open-air storage chest. Wool on wool. Circa 1900. Perfect condition. Dimensions: 116 x 57 x 46 cm. Laurent, Beauty of Kilims
