This Kars rug, dating from the 1970s, powerfully illustrates the enduring influence of Caucasian traditions on the weaving of Eastern Anatolia.
The composition is centered on two large, superimposed octagonal medallions, typical of the Caucasian repertoire, each containing a stylized star inscribed within a geometric cruciform shape.
The field, in a warm brick-red tone, contrasts with the blue-green and ivory medallions, creating a striking and harmonious chromatic balance. The particularly rich borders are enlivened by a regular succession of star motifs and scalloped friezes, reinforcing the graphic and rhythmic character of the whole. The palette, composed of muted reds, deep blues, greens, and beiges, evokes traditional dyes and gives the rug a strong decorative presence.
Made from hand-knotted wool, this rug showcases solid craftsmanship and a modern adaptation of antique designs. A fine example of 20th-century Kars production, it is prized for its decorative clarity, cultural significance, and authenticity.
