A rare pair of antique-style chairs, stamped JACOB FRÈRES RUE MESLÉE, in solid mahogany and mahogany veneer, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. An identical model, from a series of thirty originating from the offices of the Council of State, is currently held at the Mobilier National (Jean-Pierre Samoyault, Mobilier Français Consulat et Empire, Paris: Gourcuff Gradenigo, 2009, p. 62). Each openwork backrest features a wide, inverted upper rail, itself followed by two opposing volutes terminating in rosettes, around two finials. In the center, an elegant X-shaped crossbar with a turned knob completes the decoration. The front legs are turned in a tapered baluster shape, ringed, and terminating in toupie feet. The rear legs, known as "saber-shaped," follow the architectural line of the backrest to create a slender silhouette and ensure perfect stability. The seat is made of horsehair, covered in a very fine red velvet embossed with an Empire motif of laurel wreaths, palmettes, finials, and fleurons, in the style of the great Lyon manufacturers, such as Prelle or Tassinari and Chatel. The Jacob Frères stamp corresponds to the collaboration between the two sons of the famous Georges Jacob: Georges II Jacob (1768-1803) and François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter (1770-1841). During this brief seven-year period, the firm became the preferred supplier to the Garde-Meuble (Royal Furniture Repository), supplying the residences of Bonaparte and his entourage, notably the Château de Malmaison and the Tuileries Palace. The design of this chair reflects the "Return to Antiquity" movement championed by the architects Percier and Fontaine, where the simplicity of the mahogany enhances the rigor of the geometric lines. Each chair is stamped JACOB FRÈRES RUE MESLÉE. Consulate period. Good condition. Minor restorations consistent with age. Dimensions: Height: 90.5 cm Width: 47 cm Seat depth: 39 cm Bibliography: "Mobilier français Consulat et Empire" (French Furniture of the Consulate and Empire periods), Jean-Pierre Samoyault, Gourcuff Gradenigo editions, p. 62, fig. 97. -Gautier (Jean-Jacques), Sièges en société, Histoire du siège du Roi-Soleil à Marianne, Paris, 2017, Exhibition catalog, p. 202. - National Furniture: GMT 1767 and GMT 10685/001.
