Albert Nolet, Foggy Port Scene – Oil On Canvas, Signed.

An important 19th-century oil on canvas depicting a view of an old port, signed lower right A. Nolet, for Albert Nolet, a French painter active in the 19th century, renowned for his atmospheric seascapes and harbor landscapes. The composition is distinguished by a particularly poetic ambiance of mist and fog, which envelops the entire scene in a diffuse and silent light. The port, partially submerged in this luminous grayness, gradually reveals itself: gabled houses, sailboats with russet sails, and small figures animating the shoreline appear as if gently emerging from the mist. In the background, the slender silhouette of a church steeple is suggested rather than asserted, reinforcing this impression of an almost pictorial coastal view, suspended between reality and evocation, like a memory or a fleeting vision. The painting prioritizes sensation and atmosphere over meticulous description. The brushwork is free, nuanced, and particularly masterful in the treatment of the misty sky, the shifting reflections on the water, and the subtle transitions between shadow and light. The palette, dominated by bluish grays, deep browns, and warm ochres, lends the whole a quiet and contemplative poetry, characteristic of Albert Nolet's most accomplished works. Restoration: The painting has recently undergone careful restoration, including cleaning of the painted surface, application of tension strips, minor localized retouching, and the application of a protective varnish, restoring the painting's full legibility, depth, and brilliance. Frame: Presented in its substantial 19th-century carved and gilded wooden frame, which was previously regilded. The frame shows some wear consistent with its age and retains a beautiful, even patina, contributing fully to the quality and decorative presence of the work. Dimensions: Framed dimensions: 116 × 98 cm; Visible dimensions: 91 × 72 cm
