Very Rare Large Pair Of Pewter Plates - Paris, 17th Century
Artist: Nicolas Thibault
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay.
**************
Very rare pair of large round pewter platters with a wide, plain rim, known as "cardinal style," decorated with comital or viscountal coats of arms: "argent, a chevron gules accompanied by three eyes proper."
Hallmarks on both pieces: Noël THIBAULT, received master in 1626.
1st - crowned hammer / NT / P. (P for Paris), applied twice.
2nd - FIN PEWTER / N.THIBAVLT / small crowned hammer / 1643.
Diameter: 48.2 cm.
PARIS, Between 1643 and 1691.
In very good condition and of fine quality, with slight pitting and a crusty patina on the reverse.
The coat of arms could not be identified; however, the LESCAILLEZ family displayed the exact same furniture with only one difference in enamels: the chevron. being azure.
The absence of the control hallmark established by royal edict in 1691 allows these dishes to be dated before that date. Bibliography:
"Les étains de Paris, 1643-1791" by Ph. Boucaud and M. Schonn
"La poterie d'étain en France" by Roger Verdier
