Large 17th Century Icon (tempera) Of The Balkans 'san Onofrio'
Icon on a poplar panel depicting Saint Onofrio in the desert (visible are the Fountain of Youth and the stag, a symbolic representation of God, as seen when Saint Eustace returns from the hunt). Its provenance is uncertain; my research suggests a Balkan school, such as Serbia, although a Cretan or Venetian Cretan origin cannot be ruled out. The work is executed in tempera on a poplar panel. The restoration was carried out using the "trategio" technique, as is common in Italian museums, to avoid altering the original elements. Regarding dating, to remain cautious, the 17th century is plausible, although it could be an earlier provincial work. The head of Saint Onofrio possesses a gentle quality reminiscent of Giotto; a beautiful and rare example, imbued with soul. Attached are earlier documents concerning its provenance.
