Important Louis XIV Mirror With A Sculpted Pediment, Putto In High Relief And Acanthus Scrolls
An important Louis XIV period mirror, late 17th century, in carved and gilded wood, featuring exceptionally fine carving. The openwork pediment is centered by a finely carved putto in high relief, seated and holding a cornucopia. The treatment of the face, the modeling of the body, and the depth of the carving demonstrate the sculptor's exceptional skill. On either side, broad, deeply carved scrolls adorned with acanthus leaves frame the central die, whose background is richly checkered and dotted, adding relief and elegance to the whole. The rectangular frame is decorated with stylized scrolls, foliage, and flowers, all finely carved. The original gold leaf gilding displays a beautiful patina of use, with localized wear and losses consistent with the piece's age.
