Regency Style Mirror In Wood And Gilded Stucco, Decorated With Mermaids - Napoleon III Period
An elegant Regency-style mirror in carved wood and richly gilded stucco, dating from the Napoleon III period, around the mid-19th century.
The particularly dynamic composition features a scalloped frame lavishly decorated with scrolls, shells, and foliage, surmounted by a prominent, finely crafted shell motif.
The uprights are adorned with winged mermaid figures treated as consoles, lending a remarkable decorative dimension and a highly sculptural relief to the whole.
The lower section is centered by a finely modeled female mask, typical of the ornamental vocabulary inspired by the Regency period.
The overall form is particularly original and quite unusual. The original gold leaf gilding retains a beautiful presence with warm hues and slight wear consistent with age, adding to the piece's charm.
The mercury mirror is antique, with some visible alterations and pitting, consistent with its age. Note that it is a beveled mirror, skillfully following the distinctive shape of the whole.
A beautiful decorative piece, representative of the enthusiasm for 18th-century styles during the Second Empire.
