Religious Reliquary – 18th Century
A superb 18th-century oval reliquary containing four relics of saints (St. Genovefa, St. Antonius, St. Augustine, and St. Hyacinthus). These relics are displayed at the center of a decoration of gilt paper scrolls and arabesques, surrounded by flowers of glass beads and faceted yellow and purple stones, all set against a red velvet background. The whole is protected by a domed glass case and an oval case with a gilt mount, set within a wider, pointed-arch frame, finely decorated with floral motifs in gilt quilling and inlaid with colored stones. A red wax seal on the back attests to the authenticity of the relics. A delicate piece of convent work, of great finesse and rare chromatic harmony. France, 18th century.
