Portrait of a woman in a landscape – signed B. Gagneraux, 1800Oil on canvas depicting a woman in a high-waisted white shirt, her hair loose and curly, wearing hoop earrings, in the fashion popularized by Joséphine de Beauharnais during the Consulate. She is depicted standing in a wooded landscape, holding a paintbrush and pointing to a distant horizon, where a river and architecture can be seen. Signed lower right “B. Gagneraux” and dated 1800. It is attributed to Jean-Baptiste-Claude Bénigne Gagneraux puisé (1765–1846), younger brother of the history painter Jean-Baptiste Gagneraux (1756–1795). This portrait is that of a painter, highlighted by the attitude and the tool she is holding. Original giltwood frame. Dimensions 100 by 84 and 70 by 89. Gold, Frame.
