17th-century Paper Scroll – The Flight Into Egypt – Holy Family
An important 17th-century religious scroll depicting the Flight into Egypt. At its center, a medallion, finely drawn and highlighted with color, shows the Virgin Mary, the Infant Jesus, and Saint Joseph, traveling to Egypt to escape Herod's persecutions. The scene unfolds within a landscape enlivened by trees and a distant city. The whole is framed by a rich decoration of scrolls made from thin strips of rolled paper, creating a delicate work of volutes, tendrils, and ornamental motifs in gold, red, and blue tones. This type of work, generally produced in monastic settings, was intended for private devotion. Antique giltwood frame, under glass.
