Pair Of Directoire-period Straw-seated Chairs, Late 18th–early 19th Century, Made Of Fruitwood
The slightly curved backrests each feature, in the center, a rare painted metal panel depicting military scenes filled with soldiers in uniform. These compositions stand out against a striking pearlescent and iridescent background that is particularly decorative. One of the scenes bears the inscription “Galerie Militaire.”
Antique straw-padded seats, accented at the front by a wide wooden straw cover. Base with saber-shaped legs and side rails.
Both chairs are accompanied by cushions made from an antique quilted Indian cotton blanket from the early 19th century, simply tied to the frame and therefore removable.
A pair of original Directoire chairs, notable both for the shape of their backs and for the unusual presence of these two metal plates painted with military motifs.
