Monstrance - Reliquary Of Pope Leo Ii, In Silvered And Gilded Metal, Austria, Early 19th Century
A monstrance-reliquary of Saint Leo II, Pope, in copper and silvered brass, partially gilded, with a radiating form. The central glazed medallion contains an authentic relic identified by an old handwritten inscription: "Leonis secundi Papae" (Leo the Second Pope), displayed on a silk background and adorned with metallic threads and glass beads. The glory is composed of alternating, cut and chiseled rays, embellished with cabochons of colored glass (blue, green, and purple) set in floral motifs. The central frame is highlighted by a foliate frieze in relief. The upper part is surmounted by a trefoil cross adorned with blue glass stones, resting on a decorative cartouche. The baluster shaft has molded decoration and rests on a circular silvered base. Austria, early 19th century. As is (wear).
