Joseph Teissere : 18th Century French Solid Silver Platter, Aix-en-provence, Marseille 1777
Artist: Joseph Teissere
Rare 18th-century round Marseilles platter in solid silver, with a rimmed border and engraved cartouche depicting a tree (olive?) surmounted by a bird holding a branch in its beak. The reverse is engraved with "FM". It bears the charge and discharge marks for large works of the Aix jurisdiction (1775-81), the Marseille town hall mark (1777), and the hallmarks of the master silversmith Joseph Teissere (crowned initials "JT", two grains, and a fleur-de-lis below), registered in 1769. This rare round Marseilles platter is in very good condition and remarkably hallmarked, with a beautiful patina and minor surface scratches from use. Please disregard any reflections in the photos.
