Orthodox Ciborium, Gilded Copper, Silver Cup (hallmarked), Russia Or Balkan, Late 17th Century
Orthodox ciborium, gilt copper with a silver bowl. Eastern Europe (probably Russia or the Balkans), late 17th century / circa 1680–1730. Ciborium for the preservation of consecrated hosts, composed of a gilt copper body (lid, foot, and stem) and an inner silver basin. Hammered work, baluster-shaped stem with turned elements, profiled circular base. Domed lid surmounted by an Orthodox cross with trefoil ends. Surface with hammer marks characteristic of Baroque work. The silver basin bears two very worn hallmarks, probably maker's and/or standard mark, predating the standardized guarantee systems of the 18th century; likely workshop marks from the Orthodox world in the 17th century. Gilt interior. Signs of use, patina, small dents, and age-related marks. Height: … cm
