Meiji Japanese Satsuma Vase C.1895, Nanzan Mark, Cobalt Blue And Gilt Moriage
A refined antique Japanese Satsuma vase from the Meiji era, circa 1895, combining deep cobalt blue, generous gilding and finely detailed enamel painting on an ivory crackle glaze. The sleek, architectural silhouette with a wide flared rim makes it a strong decorative object even without flowers.
The workmanship is notably high grade. Faces are delicately modelled, garments densely patterned, and the narrative scene is animated by flying birds and flowing wisteria branches. Moriage and raised gilt enrich the surface with tactile relief, giving depth and a light-catching, jewel-like quality.
Marked to the base with a red seal 南山 (“Nanzan”).
