Dating and origin

Spanish flintlock pistol dating from the third quarter of the 18th century (circa 1760–1790), attributable to northern Spain, most likely the Eibar region, a renowned centre of Basque arms production. This type of pistol corresponds to a personal sidearm intended for civilian or officer use.

General description

A well-proportioned flintlock pistol of good quality, mounted in dark walnut and fitted with extensive engraved brass mounts, characteristic of late 18th-century Iberian craftsmanship. The pistol displays a high degree of stylistic and technical coherence.

Barrel

Forged iron barrel, octagonal at the breech and transitioning to round, without visible maker’s mark on the exterior, in keeping with Spanish practice. The upper flat near the lock is decorated with small brass-inlaid crosses, decorative and symbolic elements commonly encountered on Spanish arms of this period.

Lock

Spanish-type flintlock (llave de chispa), robust and well constructed, with integrated pan and battery. The cock, compact and rounded in form, corresponds closely to Basque models of the 18th century. The mechanism appears original, with no later conversion.

Stock and mounts

The walnut stock is carefully shaped and retains its original contours. The brass mounts, finely engraved, include:

  • a richly decorated pommel cap,

  • a long backstrap extending along the grip,

  • an engraved trigger guard,

  • additional ornamental brass appliqués,

  • an engraved side plate.

The decorative vocabulary, rooted in late Baroque tradition, is typical of higher-quality Spanish pistols of the period.

Condition

Very good overall condition.
Even, undisturbed patina throughout, with age-appropriate wear. No heavy restoration or modern alterations observed. Metalwork, wood and mechanism remain consistent and authentic.

Summary

An 18th-century Spanish flintlock pistol representative of Iberian civilian arms production, combining sound construction, refined brass decoration and originality. A suitable piece for an advanced collection of European antique firearms.
