Spanish Defense Blunderbuss, Circa 1872-1876, During The Third Carlist War (6.10 Kg).
A remarkably sturdy iron barrel, distinguished by its considerable weight and wall thickness of around 8 mm at the muzzle. Octagonal at the breech and frustoconical along the rest of its length, it also features a reinforcing ring. The barrel's weight and solidity suggest that it was designed to withstand heavy loads of black powder, seeking maximum firepower at close range.
It is mounted with a model 1858 percussion lock and a long-barrel, ringless frame, bearing the crowned marking "FA. DE ARS. ERMUA", indicating a "Real Fábrica de Armas" organized by the Carlists in the Biscayan town of Ermua. The butt plate and other fittings are iron, while the trigger guard is brass.
Barrel length: 465 mm.
Bore to muzzle diameter: 59 mm.
Barrel muzzle thickness: 8 mm.
Overall length: 845 mm.
Weight: 6.10 kg.
Because of its characteristics, and in particular its exceptional weight, this weapon seems to have been designed for the defense of fixed positions, intended to be used with support on a suitable stand. The absence of a ramrod seems to confirm this hypothesis.
