Clock Sculptor: Salmson / Watchmaker: Farret
Rare and magnificent, high-quality "porter" clock. Gilded bronze
sculpture depicting a beautiful vestal figure draped in the antique
style, holding the clock face and its mechanism above her head with
both arms. Napoleon III period, in the Empire style. Large white enamel
dial with delicate hands, highlighted by a gilded border and protected
by thick beveled glass. A rose, serving as the pendulum, oscillates
behind the sculpture. Square onyx base resting on four openwork scroll
feet.
Sculpture stamped "Salmson" and bearing a gold medal mark, dated 1867.
French sculptor (1807-1866), trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Awarded a gold medal, dated 1867.
Dial and mechanism stamped by the clockmaker Farret in Paris, in collaboration with the clockmaker Guyot in Lyon.
Original mechanism, unaltered. Strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell.
