Jean Besnard (1889-1958) Important Vase, C. 1940/50. Art Deco, Buthaud, Chambost, Simmen, Paris
Artist: Jean Besnard (1889-1958)
SUPERB ceramic vase by Jean Besnard, circa 1940/1950, baluster-shaped with a concentric band decoration of white/ivory glazes, some with hints of turquoise blue, on a caramel background. Beautiful glossy glaze; the interior is ivory. Signed underneath in black by hand: JB France. Height: 21 cm. Condition: perfect. Guaranteed authentic. Jean Besnard needs no introduction; he is one of the most celebrated French ceramists of the Art Deco period, along with Buthaud, Mayodon, Simmen, and Serrré, and therefore one of the most sought-after, with prices reaching over €30,000 and even higher. The son of Albert Besnard, a member of the Committee of the Society of Decorative Artists, he exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries from 1925 and at the Salon d'Automne from 1926. He had a studio in Ivry, not far from that of Pol Chambost; they were close friends, and some of their respective pieces are remarkably similar. His works are held in the collections of, among others, the Musée du Luxembourg, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Sèvres, Limoges, and elsewhere. His ashes are interred in the Père-Lachaise Columbarium.
