Biography:
Pierre-Julien Gilbert (1783–1860), born and died in Brest, dedicated his career to depicting naval scenes. A student of Pierre Ozanne and Louis-Philippe Crépin, he taught painting at the Brest Naval School from 1816. In 1830, he accompanied the French Navy during the Algerian expedition, demonstrating his commitment to the maritime institutions of his time.
