LIGHT CAVALRY OR ARTILLERY OFFICER'S SABRE, First Empire. 32695. Brass hilt. Three-branch guard with quillons. Long-tailed pommel. Beechwood grip covered in black waxed calfskin with copper wire inlay; it is fitted with an oval brass stud on each side. Curved, fullered blade, 84.7 cm long, with a raised back, richly engraved and gilded on each side and on the first third with trophies of arms, floral decorations, and the crowned imperial eagle with outstretched wings, all on a blued ground; it is signed in a central cartouche on the front of the blade, "Coulaux / Frères" and on the back, "manufacture / de / Klingenthal". Scarlet wool sword knot. Scabbard entirely of brass, engraved on the front with laurel branches, an oak branch, trophies of arms, and acanthus flowers and leaves. Two suspension rings decorated with a geometric ribbon with brass studs and rings. Scabbard throat with raised molding. Scalloped steel chape. France. First Empire. Very good condition, blade with oxidation from use, bluing of the blade having turned dark blue.
