" Exp Armes C. Le Brun/sébastien Le Clerc "battles Of Alexander The Great, King Of Macedonia - 1784"
A masterpiece engraved with coats of arms, quarto format, in a contemporary half-bound dark blue binding. A rare work that gathers and disseminates, in a late 18th-century edition, the famous series of compositions by Charles Le Brun devoted to the military exploits of Alexander the Great. The plates illustrate the major episodes of the Macedonian campaigns—Issus, Arbela, Hydaspes, among others—exalting the heroic figure of Alexander as a model of military genius and magnanimous sovereign. Le Brun, First Painter to King Louis XIV, conceived these paintings as a parallel glorification of the French monarch, placing Alexander within a tradition of political and allegorical representation. Le Clerc, a virtuoso engraver, fixed the compositions in a precise and detailed graphic language, allowing their dissemination to a wider audience. C.
