Mixed media gouache and pastel on paper
Size: 51 × 33 cm
Original frame
Beautiful and intimate composition by Joseph Laulié, dated 1983, executed in a refined mixed technique combining gouache washes and structured layers with pastel highlights, giving warmth and depth to the objects.
The scene shows a fruit bowl placed on a wooden chair, set in an artist’s studio interior, with a painting resting vertically behind.
This “painting within the painting” effect is characteristic of Laulié’s modernist approach, built on overlapping planes, geometric balance and subtle light.
Joseph Laulié (1928–2016) is a French 20th-century painter known for his still lifes, studio interiors and modern compositions where structure and softness blend harmoniously. His mixed-media works on paper are particularly sought after for their elegance and quiet poetry.
