Large panoramic engraving of Oran – 1855 – A. Lebreton – Former collection of Henri Fouques-Duparc, mayor of Oran and former member of parliament

A rare and significant panoramic engraving depicting Oran in 1855, after a work by A. Lebreton.

This remarkable view of Oran, titled “Oran – Water Intake at the Foot of Saint-Grégoire – 1855,” offers an exceptional panorama of the city, its port, its fortifications, and its military installations in the mid-19th century.

The work is signed “A. Lebreton” on the plate and printed in Paris by Auguste Bry, rue du Bac. The engravers’ names also appear in the margin.

This engraving holds additional historical significance due to its provenance: it comes from the personal collection of Henri Fouques-Duparc (1903–1976), mayor of Oran, member of the National Assembly, and later senator, and was acquired during the liquidation of his estate. Born in Oran, he had naturally kept this spectacular view of his hometown.

The engraving is offered in its original condition, with its beautiful patina of age: an old central fold, a tear along that fold, foxing, and traces of moisture, with no restoration. It is presented in its original frame and mounted on a rigid backing.

Beyond its documentary value, this large composition captivates with its impressive dimensions (116 × 50 cm unframed) and the quality of its execution, making it a prime piece for collectors of iconography from Algeria, Oran, and 19th-century topographical views.

Dimensions of the engraving: 116 × 50 cm (without frame).

Provenance: acquired at the estate sale of Henri Fouques-Duparc in Pujo-le-Plan (Landes), former mayor of Oran, French deputy, and senator.
