Biography
Carlo Bononi, an Italian painter, is mainly known for his works in the Baroque style, influenced by masters such as Caravaggio, although he was also inspired by the Venetian painting of the time.
Bononi worked mainly in Ferrara and Bologna where he produced religious works, mythological scenes and portraits. He developed a style characterized by dramatic compositions and an expressive use of light and shadow.
Carlo BONONI, endowed with an exceptional pictorial sense, assimilated the lesson of the Venetians and became interested in the naturalism of Caravaggio, which he knew during a stay in Rome between 1605 and 1610.
We owe him a series of religious paintings of great vigor distinguished from the Bolognese by great freedom of mind.
He always kept a certain typical Ferrara novel fantasy, which is found in this painting without ever giving in to the dominant trend in Emilia, after 1620.
"The Flight to Egypt" by Carlo Bononi is an emblematic work of Italian Baroque art.
