Carved Ivory “memento Mori” Skull – Spain 19th Century – With Eu Cites Permit
Carved Ivory “Memento Mori” Skull – Spain 19th century – with EU CITES permit.
Great and superb “Memento Mori” skull, entirely carved in ivory, rests on its original base covered in green velvet. It is accompanied by two crossed tibias, also in ivory, and a frontal plaque engraved with “Memento Mori.” This Spanish work from the late 19th century is of exceptional craftsmanship.
Description:
The skull exhibits highly realistic modeling: deep eye sockets, meticulously crafted teeth, internal texture of the nose, and fissures imitating cranial sutures. The surface displays a beautiful antique patina, with a natural network of cracks characteristic of antique ivory. The long bones are carved in the same material, with visible grain and smoothed ends.
The entire piece rests on a velvet-covered wooden base, slightly worn with age but perfectly in keeping with the object.
Cabinet piece, typical of the symbolic and moralistic works of the late 19th century, intended to remind us of the vanity of earthly things.
Dimensions: approximately 15 × 10 × 11 cm (including base).
Condition:
Very good overall condition for its age. Even patina, natural ivory fissures, original velvet slightly worn. No visible restoration.
Provenance: Spanish collection.
Material: Elephant ivory (Elephas maximus / Loxodonta africana), carved.
CITES: Sold with its original European CITES certificate (number visible in the photos). The document authorizes its possession and sale within the European Union.
