Sculpture Of Saint George Slaying The Dragon, Italy, 17th Century
Beautiful alabaster sculpture depicting Saint George on his rearing horse slaying the dragon. The saint, wearing a feathered hat and draped in a flowing cloak, is portrayed with panache. He wields a lance which he plunges into the dragon's mouth.
The horse is also superbly rendered in its rearing posture with beautifully sculpted details.
The back of the sculpture is equally interesting, with details of the folds in Saint George's cloak as well as the dragon's wing.
The work rests on a later, sloping wooden base.
Southern Italy, 17th century.
Visible losses and damage. Dimensions of the sculpture alone: 20cm long, 19cm high.
With the base: 28cm long, 25cm high. Shipping cost extra.
