Statue Of St. Barbara In White Marble, Italy, Dated 1539
Rare representation of Saint Barbara holding a tower in her right armand resting on a high pedestal. The pedestal bears the inscription:
"This workwas commissioned by the Confraternity of Saint Barbara under the prioryof Bartolomeo de Monte Sisto and Paolo de Suma Ripa, as well as ofBattista Samb Aldi and Antonio de Castello, in the year of our Lord 1539, on the first day of February.the first day of February."
Although the statue's head is missingthe statue is missing, it nonetheless exudes impressive charisma andand very well finished. The dedication probably refersA fine example of Italian Renaissance sculpture!
