Large Regency Period Armchair, Commode Chair, Caned Seat, Circa 1720, 18th Century
A substantial and large Regency period armchair with a cane back, made of natural waxed and patinated wood, circa 1720. This large seat, with its highly unusual proportions (see photo 2 / comparison with a chair of the same period), was originally a commode chair. Superbly molded and finely carved, the armchair features a cane-backed seat. The seat consists of a fixed structure upon which rests a removable, lined, and beige velvet-covered top. Given the chair's atypical and exceptional dimensions and proportions, it was most likely a custom order, making this armchair a truly exceptional piece of furniture. A side opening on one side of the seat allows the armchair to be used as a storage bench. The rear legs are steeply angled, providing excellent stability. The upholstery of the removable section is in very good condition, and the seat is stable and firm. Two discreet marks are present on the fabric. The piece is in superb condition.
