Robert Kammerer was born in Mulhouse on December 1, 1882, but lived in Thann where he died in 1965. He attended drawing classes at the Industrial Society of Mulhouse, Girardot in Paris, then the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg where he studied under Daubner. He followed this with further training in Paris and Munich and numerous trips to Germany, Italy, Albania, and Greece. He studied the mountains with great care, spending extended periods on high-altitude farms in the Vosges mountains, particularly in Mollau and Langenbach. He established a reputation as a painter of the high mountains, leaving us with stunning views of the Vosges lakes and mountains under snow, as well as beautiful landscapes of the Alsatian plains and vineyards bathed in exceptional light. He participated in numerous exhibitions at Salons and galleries in Mulhouse, Colmar, Strasbourg, and Paris. He was named an Officer of the Order of Academic Palms and a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
