Chinese Scholar's Stone Weight. China, Qing Period.
Artist: Qing
Polished black stone scholar's weight. Simply decorated with five characters that compose a poem, it appears to depict a "Clear Fountain Flowing from a Rock." It symbolizes tranquility and meditation. These weights were used by Chinese scholars to hold down scrolls of paintings or calligraphy. The stone is hard but can be scratched with a steel point; it is much harder than soapstone and less so than agate or jade. The characters are carved in shallow hollows that were once filled with gilded metallic powder, now almost entirely gone. It is difficult to date this weight with certainty; it is a Chinese work from the Qing dynasty, 19th century or earlier. 137 x 33 x 20 mm, 320 g
