The artist, who enjoyed staying in Franche-Comté to soak up the surrounding nature, probably painted a landscape of Orchamps here. Signature lower right. Very beautiful gilt frame. Followed by the handwritten inscription in ink: "191 Beautiful sky and plain. » Dimensions of the view: 44 x 27.7 cmDimensions with frame: 44 x 60 cm Jean Henri Zuber was born in 1844 in Rixheim and died in 1909 in Paris. He grew up in the atmosphere of the wallpaper factory founded by his father. After training at the École Navale in Paris, he began a career in the navy and participated in expeditions to Korea, Tonkin, and the China Sea. He joined the profession of artist around 1868, and was a student of Charles Gleyre. His paintings were initially drawn from his travel memories, then he became interested in mythological subjects before truly concentrating on what he preferred to represent: nature. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1869 and at the Salon of the Society of French Watercolorists, he also participated in the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. A great traveler, he also exhibited in Rome, Vienna, Munich, Stuttgart, and Venice. He received the titles of Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1886 and then Officer in 1906. His works can be seen at the Museums of Mulhouse, the Museum of Fine Arts in Strasbourg, the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar and also at the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre in Paris.
