Intimate Scene Signed Plassan
Artist: Plassan Antoine-emile (1817-1903)
Antoine Émile Plassan (1817-1903), French painter born in Bordeaux and died in Paris, specialized in portraits and intimate scenes imbued with tenderness.
He exhibited at the Salon in Paris from 1846 and was awarded medals in 1852, 1857 and 1859. Named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1859.
Works by Plassan are present in museum collections, notably at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux, the Musée Magnin in Dijon, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Musée National des Beaux Arts du Québec and in the Royal Collections of England, notably for a work offered by Queen Victoria to Prince Albert on December 24, 1860.
The artist drew inspiration for certain works from Dutch painters of the Golden Age.
Our painting shows a seated woman dressed in a beautiful dress made from a wide-striped fabric, she is handling a shawl, unless it is the staging of an embroidery activity. The scene takes place in a bourgeois atmosphere, reflecting a certain opulence in view of the rich carpet covering the table, on it a vase filled with flowers, an open box revealing fabrics. On the wall a background of woodwork serves as a support for an 18th century marble fireplace on which we can see a rich cartel with rocaille decoration.
Oil on wood panel 21 x 27 cm - 33 x 38 cm with frame.
