Eugène Paul, known as Gen Paul (1895-1975), a self-taught French artist, his first paintings from 1919 to 1924 were signed under the pseudonym Paul Trelade. He frequented the Bateau-Lavoir, was a friend of Juan Gris, who helped him greatly, and was close to other artists such as Maurice de Vlaeminck, Franck-Will, and Maurice Utrillo. His works depict the dynamics of movement, are full of optimism, and reflect the joy of living. The themes of the circus, musicians, and racetracks are recurring. Some critics position Gen Paul as one of the precursors of abstract expressionism of the 1950s. In addition to numerous private collections, many works are included in the collections of French and European museums, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Bern, Granville, etc. He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1934.
