Interior Of A Winemaker's House By Martin Drölling

An oil on canvas by Martin Drölling depicting an interior scene reminiscent of the painting "The Peddler, the Traveling Merchant" in the Musée de la Chartreuse in Douai. A man, likely a winegrower, sits on a barrel, holding a glass of wine, watching a blond child playing while crouching with a wooden bucket. Behind him stands a woman dressed in red, holding a jug and gazing out at the outside world. The open door lets in soft light, flooding the room. The work is signed lower right. For its preservation, the painting has been relined. Dimensions: 24.2 x 18.7 cm. Dimensions with frame: 36.7 x 31 cm. Martin Drölling was born in Oberbergheim on September 19, 1752, and died in Paris in 1817. At the age of eleven, he learned to paint on earthenware stoves from a painter in his village who also painted on glass. In 1768, he left his rural home for Paris and painted numerous copies at the Louvre before entering the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1779. He then worked as a figure painter and consultant artist at the Sèvres porcelain factory. He exhibited extensively, notably at the Salon de la Correspondance in Paris and the Salon du Louvre. His works can be seen at the Louvre Museum, in particular one of his most famous paintings, "The Kitchen Interior," as well as at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg, and in the museums of Bordeaux, Caen, Orléans, and Mulhouse.
