Biography source: Wikipedia
Stanislas François de Bergue was born in Paris in 1820.
He received his artistic training at the École royale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Léon Cogniet, with whom he developed a taste for seascapes and landscapes. In Nicolas Gosse’s class, he practiced genre painting and historical painting
He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1845, then in 1847, and again from 1861 through 1867. His travels through the south of France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal allowed him to bring back numerous landscapes of the ports and coastlines of the Mediterranean and the English Channel. His brushwork, precise and meticulous in his early works, blossomed and became more free-flowing over the years. He became increasingly interested in the effects of light, while continuing to faithfully depict the rigging of the ships he painted.
He died at the age of 76.
