Antique Painting Signed "tommaso De Vivo 1867". Naples 19th Century.

Antique oil painting on canvas with contemporary frame. Signed "Tommaso De Vivo 1867". Naples, 19th century.

The painting depicts a scene of rural daily life set in the second half of the 19th century, 1867 to be precise.

At the center of the composition are two young boys united by a bond of affection and familiarity.

The scene is simple and rustic, and both wear traditional clothing depicted in meticulous detail.

In the foreground are several doves pecking at fallen seeds, while others approach the basket.

Their presence adds movement to the scene and emphasizes the theme of simple living and caring for domestic animals.

The style is realistic, with influences from European genre painting. The colors are warm but slightly muted, with a soft light illuminating the faces and clothing.

P.S. Signed lower right, Tommaso De Vivo, 1867.

Tommaso De Vivo:
(Orta di Atella, circa 1790 - Naples 1884)
A student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, in 1821, as a pensioner from the Royal Institute, he moved to Rome where he frequented the studio of Vincenzo Camuccini, who inspired his work. He also showed interest in the French Academy in Rome and French painting, drawing inspiration from Léopold Robert. He studied primarily at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and in 1838 was a member of the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon. He participated in numerous editions of the Bourbon Exhibitions with paintings of mythological and historical subjects. Around 1833, he executed drawings for the illustrations of the History of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, published in Rome, and in the 1840s, three Allegories of the Divine Comedy, commissioned by Ferdinand II of Bourbon, who appointed him Inspector General of the Royal Art Galleries. His paintings are housed in the Royal Palace of Naples, the Royal Palace of Caserta, and the Capodimonte Museum. Among his allegorical-celebratory paintings are the Allegory of Strength and Timidity, with Mars and Venus, purchased by Margherita of Savoy in 1869, and Italy and its Geniuses, donated to the Italian Senate.
